Description
I took this photo of the Mushroom House when I was on a trip to the Port of Charlevoix on Lake Michigan, U.S.A. It was built in 1918 by Earl A. Young, who used no blueprint, but designed the roof on a napkin, then built the roof first...ot of the finest thatch, hand-reaped in Europe and shipped to the U.S. Then he pushed boulders of limestone up under the roof and finished the three floors inside with more stone... steps, fireplaces and tables, etc. In a span of 52 more years he built 31 more structures called gnome houses, hobbit houses or mushroom houses. He said the stones just spoke to him and he wanted to show that stone houses cold be as impressive as a castle.
