Description
I took this photo of what is probably the last barge that plied the waters of the Royal Canal in Ireland before its closure in 1951. Construction on the Canal began in 1790 and lasted 25 years until it opened.. Goods and passengers were carried on the Canal until its closure. Waterways of Ireland began restoration of the Canal in the 1980's and it reopened in 2010. We enjoyed renting a narrow canal boat and traveling due west from Dubin, stopping in small communities and going through 25 locks and back again. See adjacent photo "Working the Lock".

How sad to see a old boat forgotten and sinking ! :(
Kenlynn Schroeder replied:
Ciao Francesca, Yes, sad, but a slice of picturesque history...and the juxtaposition between the decay and then the restoration of the canal and the emerging redevelopment of the region...economically...pubs, restaurants, shops and guesthouses in the small communities along the canal... heading west of Dublin all the way to the Shannon River in the middle of the country. Best to you, Kenlynn
