How sad to see a old boat forgotten and sinking ! :(

Ciao Francesca, Yes, sad, but a slice of picturesque history...and the juxtaposition between the decay and then the restoration of the canal and the emerging redevelopment of the region...economically...pubs, restaurants, shops and guesthouses in the small communities along the canal... heading west of Dublin all the way to the Shannon River in the middle of the country. Best to you, Kenlynn

Artist's Description

I took this photo of what is probably the last barge that plied the waters of the Royal Canal in Ireland before its closure in 1951. Construction on the Canal began in 1790 and lasted 25 years until it opened.. Goods and passengers were carried on the Canal until its closure. Waterways of Ireland began restoration of the Canal in the 1980's and it reopened in 2010. We enjoyed renting a narrow canal boat and traveling due west from Dubin, stopping in small communities and going through 25 locks and back again. See adjacent photo "Working the Lock".

To BUY ORIGINAL Art click "GALLERIES". New York art critic Chris Geiger wrote “Schroeder’s fanciful watercolors bring a refreshingly unfettered sensibility to bear on subjects ranging from still life to life under the sea, all evoked with breezy charm in a fluent line and luminous areas of translucent color.” After a long career in international humanitarian work, based in San Francisco and Manhattan, and the owner of the former Lucinda Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, I am blessed to be able to continue traveling and painting despite losing much of my eyesight. My eclectic body of art includes still life, life under the sea, mountains, troubadours, abstracts and scenes painted on location on trips to Italy...
